A great stopover....

..this hotel is right on the Giethoorn canals, excellent location, room was clean albeit a bit small, but with a kettle which always helps. Bars and resaurants nearby, which are excellent. Couldn't hire a boat for some reason, but got another from somewhere else. Breakfast is OK, if you, like me, want a cooked breakfast you're limited to mashed eggs and streaky bacon. Staff were very helpful. I had no trouble with the check-in despite it being automated, parking, if your lucky and have a average sized car you can park outside the hotel, otherwise you can park free in the hotel's boatyard which is at least 7/8mins walk away.

Educated consideration required. There are a number of things that I really did not like about this "hotel". It's not nice, it's quite unpleasant.
More of an inmate than a guest. I bought the below points to Management and quite frankly there was little understanding, customer care or decorum. I felt more like I was talking to a dictator who did not want a discussion, I was told "this is the way things are". I had initiated a private conversation, yet they recommenced it in the breakfast room in front of other customers. Maybe they are used to the complaints and this how they now choose to deal with them? It was incredible.
We bought through Booking ( £148 ) and at the point of making the purchase there was little mention of the need to pay extra for bedding. This would not have been a problem for us as we had previously stayed in mountain and lakeside lodges that clearly specified that by using your own bedding there would be no charge for these and it was an option for the customer, made very obvious. But when we arrived here, not particularly late in the day, we had to book in through an automated kiosk. Before gaining access to the room via the code offered at the kiosk, we had pay a further 30 euros for bedding. There was nobody to discuss this with, it was a question of losing £148 or paying the extra 30E. This is meant to be a hotel and not a hostel. £148 would have been a good nights stay in a decent hotel. It cost us the best part of £180.
Whilst we were there a couple, one of whom was disabled arrived in the car park. This hostel had 41 rooms and 15 parking spaces none of which were marked for the disabled. The overspill carpark is a 300m walk. With bags, with family and when we arrived, in the rain. When I approached Management they said that the over spill was 15m away. A blatant lie to my face.
The stairs are probably original. I guess this because they have tiny treads and would not under and circumstances pass modern building standards. Ok, so you are a little more careful. But at the top of the stairs was an aluminium trimmer that quite frankly could have not been better designed if the intention was to trip you up and send you barrelling down the stairs.
We had a large room, open plan with a double bedroom off. The aircon was undersized and did not cool the place down. In the middle of the night I arose and stood in a pool of water that had come from the aircon unit. I had to turn it off before there was permanent damage to the flooring. So we were all a much hotter than we would have wanted and thus very uncomfortable.
The "Welcome" book includes rules. A number of the rules relate to the prohibition of the use, and sale of drugs. No parties with Heavy Metal. Really? The first time I have ever come across that. Also there was a section about fines that could be imposed at the discretion of staff. It's a hostel.
The breakfast was unappealing and the scrambled eggs were burnt. How do you turn scrambled eggs black with burn? They don't really care about the customer experience.
We all accept a bit of give and take. We work round things. But the attitude was the icing on the cake.
I hope never to make a similar mistake when booking hotels in the future.

More of a hostel than a hotel

To us this hotel feels like something between a hotel and a hostel. It doesn't look very welcoming, it has very basic rooms and the buildings and immediate surroundings look like they need a bit of a spruce up. You check in, and out, using a terminal, there is no reception desk, and there is only staff around occasionally. If you have any questions you will have to contact the hotel by phone or by pressing a button on the check-in terminal. Instead of a key card you use a code to enter your room which didn't feel entirely safe.
The rooms are quite adequate, the luxury rooms are more "rustic" than luxurious. The regular rooms are smaller but seem to be newer. We were fortunate enough to get rooms with AC (thanks to the lovely woman from the hotel who helped us check in when we arrived early). Without AC the rooms would have been unbearably hot.
The rooms were clean with nice showers, and the luxury room had bath products from Rituals. The beds were good, but had green plastic mattress covers, which I am not a big fan of.
The restaurant was closed, and only served breakfast, it was basic but did have poffertjes, which was a nice surprise.
All in all it was fine for one night but we wouldn't come back.

Hotel Gietthorn

The room and price for the stay was satisfactory. The check in process is done via a kiosk and did not work for us. I had all my information needed but it would not process. We stood in the rain and wind for 20 mins trying to get the info for our room. Also, although we had paid before hand there was an add'l fee that we had to pay at this kiosk which I am not sure what was for. You speak to someone via kiosk but they cut out and you are unable to ask questions. The room was clean and nice. The breakfast staff were very kind and helpful but stated were not part of hotel.

Don’t expect anything back from this place!

Honestly haven’t ever seen such a terrible service, we rented a boat from the place for three hours, meaning we are using their service, I am 7th months pregnant and had the urge to pee, they declined both times even if I mentioned I am pregnant, never have seen such a lack of emphaty in my life! Very frustrating, I will understand if we are just unknown people walking from the outside asking to use the toilet, but we are their customers, yes we are in the middle a pandemic and if they care as they said they do, they will at least weir a mask indoors as they request everybody else to do it.
