Home-cooked local cuisine at the family-run Black Forest hotel inn

In mid-July we treated ourselves to a weekend in the Middle Black Forest. We moved into accommodation for two nights in the Gasthof Adler on the Fohrenbühl, a pass altitude of almost 800 m that connects the villages of Hornberg in the Gutachtal and Schramberg in the Schiltachtal.
In the traditional inn run by the Moosmann family – family-owned since 1780 (!!) – we were warmly welcomed. Our two connecting rooms were quality and tastefully decorated. The comfortable beds made our daughter feel right at home.
A rich and extremely varied breakfast buffet was included in the hospitably calculated room rate. It enhanced the start of the day culinary and strengthened us for the planned hike.
Because only a few steps away from the stately estate of the Moosmanns, several circuits started right away. We chose the Lauterbacher Hochtalrunde, which took us for about 10.5 kilometers through the Sulzbachtal, one of the most beautiful high valleys of the Black Forest.
Extensive hiking is known to make you hungry and so on the second evening we were especially looking forward to the hearty local cuisine at the “Adler”. The day before, we were able to convince ourselves of their quality with chanterelle cream soup (7.90 euros), wild herb salad with pumpkin seed oil dressing and fried bacon (11.50 euros), venison with cream chanterelles (25.90 euros) and cheese sparrow (14.90 euros).
The hoppy-fruity Black Forest Summer Ale (0.3l for 4.30 euros) from the family brewery Ketterer from the neighbouring Hornberg served me as a substantial aperitif. Incidentally, the alcohol-free Pils from the Ironing Bottle (0.3l for 3.80 euros) came from the same brewery, which my wife chose. The small apple juice platter (0.2l for 2.90 euros) for our daughter could not be missing.
My wife liked the Swabian Sauerbraten with homemade potato balls (20,90 Euro) the most, while I preferred the onion roast with the same side dish (32,90 Euro). Our daughter was looking forward to a portion of Spätzle with dark roast sauce (5,50 euros). A children's plate that always goes down well with her with appropriate sauce quality.
Reordering the side dishes from Spätzle to house croquettes was worth the extra charge of 1 euro. I had already enjoyed the fluffy earth apple balls the night before. What worked for the venison with cream chanterelles should not miss its sauce-absorbing effect even with the dark roast sauce poured on to the stately onion roast.
They were really the first homemade croquettes that could come close to matching those of my late mother. I enjoyed each and every one of them in grateful memory of the familiar cuisine of days long gone by. Of course, with all the enthusiasm for side dishes, the most “fleshness”, initially concealed by roasted onions, was due to the tranche of beef back, which was impeccably placed on the porcelain in the desired degree of cooking “medium”.
A hearty housekeeper in the very best sense, who easily recouped the calories lost during the hike and later released me full, happy and strengthened towards the hotel room.
Even my wife didn’t “sour” the ordered Swabian roast. On the contrary, the three wonderfully crusty braised slices of roast beef, which were given the typical sour taste by marinating with red wine, vinegar and spices, were perfectly compatible with the tart and spicy – bay leaves, juniper berries and cloves gave a taste greeting – expertly tasted sauerbratensauce.
My wife did it after me and ennobled her potato balls with the full-bodied pouring that it was the purest joy to watch her do it. I don’t know how she managed to squeeze a capital piece of the homemade apple pie after “Grandma Sophie’s recipe” (4.50 euros). But it also looked really fantastic.
The youngest at the table had decided for dessert on a scoop of vanilla ice cream with cream (3.50 euros), which made her in a good mood. As the evening before, we left the attractively furnished guest room of the Moosmann family. The fact that culinary traditions from the Black Forest homeland are preserved here already hints at the rustic wooden interior (including preserved coffered ceiling from old days).
At this point I would like to highlight the performance of service chief Manuela Wurzer, who really took care of our daughter's concerns with touching touch and always had a friendly word on her lips. I had noticed her turned manner already very positively when booking the room.
Just like owner and chef Karl-Josef Moosmann, who also likes to leave the realm of pans and pots to inquire about their satisfaction with his guests, the trained restaurant expert Manuela Wurzer approaches her guests with sympathetic looseness and the right amount of humor. As a guest you not only feel very well looked after, but also welcomed in a very lovable way.
If you value a local cuisine cooked to perfection in a traditional setting and would like to find home-cooked products from local products on your plate, you will get your money's worth at Gasthof Adler. The eclectic breakfast buffet arranged with love and the spacious rooms equipped with comfortable beds already make us think about the next hiking weekend on the Fohrenbühl...

Typical Restaurant with Excellent Value for Money and Award

Excellent restaurant in a quiet and bucolic location.
We went there on a Sunday lunchtime and were warmly welcomed.
Very good traditional dishes with a quality-quantity ratio and quite exceptional Award.

Overpriced lentil soup

Had lunch after an excursion. The friendly landlady offered us lentil soup with spaetzle and wiener sausages, which was not on the menu, and we were shocked when we paid!!! 19.90 euros per plate for lentil soup!!! We recommend telling the guest the price of a dish beforehand. We would have chosen a soup at a reasonable price... Unfortunately, the dish was not priced on the menu or on a board...

2nd stay and it won’t be our last

Fabulous hotel in the heart of the Black Forest. It is easy to find with lots of free parking. We were able to park our motorcycles in the garage on the 1st night. The staff are excellent and speak very good English, we got on very well with Dragos as we remembered him from our previous visit. The rooms are very comfortable and quiet. Food in the restaurant is excellent and there is lot of choice including some regional specialities.
