Excellent Marriott in Old Town Brussels

Excellent location in Old Town Brussels. Minutes walk from Central Train Station to visit Bruges (a must!). Wonderful buffet breakfast with an excellent staff. Special shout outs to Marriott employees: Clara (front desk), Oualid and Malik. Gauthier, at the breakfast buffet went up & beyond to make sure my husband & I were happy. He even taught my husband to make a Belgium waffle. All very personable, professional, and passionate staff. The hotel has a "M" Club - a very big benefit and also a diner restaurant with affordable prices. Excellent chicken sandwich. Summary: 5/5 starts. This is our 2nd stay and will absolutely visit again.

WARNING

Booked a room with a bathtub where the shower is in the bath. There were no handrails to be able to exit the bath safely or secure floor mats. Stepping out on to a towel on a tiles surface caused me to slip and fall. I was immediately referred to their insurer who has not acknowledged my responses to their counter comments and have declined to provide any means to complain about their response. They advised that "In the absence of a dedicated handle, one could reasonably use the towel handle or the glass for support." The towel rail placement was not in a position to be able to use it safely (nor should it be) and as to using a glass door for support, well that is just mind blowing. I did ask the hotel if they would concur this statement and support this as intended use, including weight bearing and was referred back to the insurer. This configuration in these rooms needs to be looked at, it is simply unsafe and hotels have a duty of care to ensure the safety of their guest. All I had hoped was for some kind of gesture from the hotel and acknowledgement that they needed to look at this for other people staying at the hotel. I really worry about this happening to others as I was so careful yet slipped. If you are in one of these rooms make sure your bath mat on the floor is wet or get someone to help you exit the tub, or alternatively ask to be moved. I am both shocked and disappointed at the situation and thankfully was not injured badly and just want to warn people. I would have expected that the hotel could have dealt with this rather than their insurance company who in my opinion failed to acknowledge anything I challenged back on. They are a major hotel brand and I fail to understand why this has happened. As to the insurer my only choice is to challenge their lack of acknowledgement via the ombudsman but deep down I feel that the hotel could have dealt with this themselves by acknowledging that this happened and will resolve this - i.e. add a grab rail and show me that me as a customer am valued and seen.

Dear Dreamer729527,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.
We are truly sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations and that you suffered injury during your time in Brussels.
While we appreciate that you are sharing your perspective on the safety configuration of our bathrooms, we want to assure you that we adhere rigorously to all safety regulations and industry standards. Each of our bathtubs is equipped with a handle specifically designed to assist guests in standing up safely.
Please be assured that we are sincerely sorry about your experience which is the first of its kind that we have recorded since the complete remodeling of our hotel, guestrooms and bathrooms completed in the first part of 2023. We also understand that when you reported the incident to our front office team, they immediately offered support, which was unfortunately declined at the time.
Once again, thank you for your feedback, as it helps us in our continuous efforts to improve the quality of our products and services while always adhering to the highest safety and security standards.
Kind regards,
Tula M.

Double check your bill on departure. They are crooks.

Very disappointed by the disgraceful treatment we received at this Marriott. Upon check in the front desk staff told us the location of breakfast, but not that it was not included in our rate, despite being asked that question. The next morning we went to breakfast and the waitstaff did not tell us our room was not on the list maintained at the hostess station. She simply wrote our room number down on a piece of paper. No bill was presented and no notification made. We scrambled to get into a taxi to make a flight and left assuming all was well, since the room was paid for. I then saw a 64 euro charge on my credit card for breakfast. In a lengthy email chain with the hotel staff they flatly refused to reimburse me and didn't acknowledge the multiple opportunities their own staff should have taken to tell us there would be a charge. This hotel is managed by criminals. And anyway the rooms are substandard for a Marriott property and the entrance smells like urine. There are literally hundred of other hotels that are better to stay in. I'm saying all this as a loyal Marriott customer. AVOID.

Dear michaelpF8291EX,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely regret that your experience did not meet your expectations and apologize for any frustration caused during your stay.
We understand how the situation regarding breakfast charges could have led to confusion, and we regret any miscommunication on our part. While we always aim to provide clear information at check-in, we acknowledge that there were multiple opportunities where our team could have reinforced this detail. As breakfast was not included in your booking, the charge was applied accordingly, but we recognize that the process could have been handled more transparently.
Please rest assured that we are taking this matter seriously and will be reinforcing our procedures with the team to ensure better communication and clarity for our guests moving forward. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we appreciate your loyalty to Marriott.
Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment you experienced.
Best regards,
Tula

Room very clean and comfortable. On one occasion when using the bar I visited the ladies toilet. Condition of toilet was quite frankly deplorable. We didn’t always get our tea and coffee replenished but I’m sure we would have if we had requested.
Location is excellent, right in the heart of Brussels and within easy walking distance of the sights and pubs/restaurants.

Pleasant and practical

The Bon Voy Marriott is located opposite the classical facade of the Beer Museum, making it easy for a foreigner to find on foot in the midst of circuitous roads of Brussels. The hotel is friendly, the lobby cosy, the breakfast ample and savoring, and the service very helpful. The concierge gave me directions and maps for sites in the city as well as help to tour other cities.
